Joanna Varley
Joanna's strengths are as an energetic visionary who is creative and inventive. Her leadership capabilities have been proven many times to build high performing teams. She has excellent understanding of strategic change and has a "can do" attitude. Joanna brings a depth of understanding and experience to both the service and execution challenges for new web based businesses. Joanna has been a member of the Institute of Directors since 2002 and holds a BSc (Joint Hons.) in Economics & law from Cardiff Business School. She has broad international experience assisted by being a native French speaker and fluent in German.
New product and market development
Joanna’s career in Financial Services started with Prudential in 1991, where she held senior sales and marketing roles and specialised in defining and implementing key change programmes in both products and distribution. In 1996 she joined Henderson Global Investors as Director of Strategy and Business Development, which included accountability for development of new products and markets.
Online international business strategy and execution
Following Henderson’s acquisition by AMP in 1998, she was asked to lead all aspects of e-business development for the Group. She built and launched a new web based financial services business, Ample, before acquiring iii and then successfully integrated the two businesses. The combined business won the 2002/2003 award for best financial services website. The Ample/iii business model was also deployed in Japan and New Zealand and was a key part of the AMP Investor Relations Roadshow in 2001. In her last role at AMP as Director European Business Development she created a new team, working closely with Henderson, to define European growth plans for the Group. The strategy, execution plans and initial acquisition in Italy were approved by the AMP Board in 2002.
Multi-disciplinary product and service management
Joanna then joined Barclays UK Banking. As Managing Director, Debt & Deposits, Joanna built up multidisciplinary product teams to manage the full choice of lending, savings and liquidity products across UK Banking (excluding Personal Customer Current Account and Transactions), alongside FX and International Trade Products. Most recently Joanna worked as the Executive Director, DC Services at Fidelity Investments, responsible for the development and delivery of service and web propositions in their UK DC business, including a successful and profitable launch of a DB Administration Service and has completed a Pensions Strategy assignment for LV.Recent Posts:
